Levi Strauss is recognized as the inventor of blue jeans. He introduced his now-iconic garment in San Francisco in 1873. Originally intended to serve as durable worker pants, Levi's have become a fixture of American life.

1. Rivets

   • According to LeviStrauss.com, the original design for Levi jeans was innovative because it placed metal rivets at the pocket corners and at the bottom of the fly to reinforce these areas, which endured the most stress.

   501 Jean

   • Originally called the XX, the 501 style is Levi's classic jean. It is noted for having five pockets, a button fly and straight legs. It quickly became the company's first best-seller and remains popular today.

   517 Jean

   • The 517 jean is a five-pocket design that sits at the waist. Its legs have a wide flare to drop over boots, and unlike the 501 style, the 517 has a zipper fly.

     550 Jean

     • The 550 style is also called "Relaxed Fit." Resting at the waist with a zipper fly, the design provides extra room in the seat and around the thighs, as well as a tapered leg.

     Type 1

     • Introduced in 2003, the Type 1 jean was created to celebrate the 150th year of Levi Strauss & Co., which began as a wholesale dry goods business in San Francisco in 1853.
